Ecology work on new World Heritage site

Ecology

We have been commissioned to prepare a management plan for works associated with the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Canal. This important historical feature was recently named by UNESCO as the 28th World Heritage inscribed site in the UK, and the third in Wales.

This prestigious contract is being undertaken for a partnership of local authorities, government agencies and British Waterways, along an eighteen kilometre stretch of the popular LLangollen Canal. Its purpose is to ensure that the views of the stunning Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, other features of canal engineering and of the surrounding Vale of Llangollen can be restored without damaging the ecology and habitats of the designated sites and landscapes through which the canal passes.

The management plan will be developed following careful assessment of the habitats, tree stock and protected species present along the length of the canal, and provides an exciting opportunity to restore the setting of this world-famous monument to the prowess of Victorian enterprise and engineering ability.

Mount Pond Resoration Project

We are working with Lambeth Borough Council and the Environment Agency on a project to breathe new life into Mount Pond, the largest of three lakes on Clapham Common in Central London. Mount Pond has experienced a series of water quality problems and fish mortalities over recent years, and its habitat is artificial and degraded.

We have carried out an ecological assessment of the lake looking specifically at the status of fish, aquatic invertebrates, terrestrial and aquatic plants, and wildfowl inhabiting the lake and the surrounding area. We have also consulted with key users of the Common to determine a range of habitat and amenity improvements to ensure that the lake provides a valuable and sustainable resource for the local community to enjoy.
